Early spring on Dartmoor is truly magical. Here’s why I love spending time on the moor in April:

After a long winter of muted pastel colours the Gorse flowers arrives on the moor in vibrant yellow shining as bright as the sun across large areas of Dartmoor, this completely transforms the landscape and when that spring sun warms the bushes they release the sweetest scent reminisce of coconut…pure spring joy!

April is also when the lambing season is in full swing on Dartmoor and the cutest ever white fluffy lambs are all around of course so are the wild horses with their first fowls of the season playing and racing over the hills…so delightful!

One of my favourite ways to wake up on a wild camp on Dartmoor is to the sound of the cuckoo and April and May is the time to experience this iconic bird call across the hills and if we are patient enough we will get to spot them too!

I also love the early spring for wild camping as the sun rises just at the perfect time for breakfast and a hot brew and it sets early enough that we get to see the stars at night too which are incredible on a clear night on Dartmoor.

Going for a long walk and wild camp in spring is the perfect way to wake up the body from its winter slump and Dartmoor is the loveliest place to do this if you ask me!

Start time: Totnes station on Saturday the 17th. 12.00 am

End time: Totnes station Monday the 19th. 4.00 pm

The 9.04 am train from London Paddington will get you to Totnes 11.47 am.
